The technology of photography

Recent discussions about the advent of cheap digital cameras for the masses in recent years and the ongoing use of film prompted me to think about the technology of photography and the reasons why I use the gear I do.

One thing that most photographers have in common is a fairly consistent desire to own more gear - some collect rooms full of classics, while others spend 10's of thousands on studios and digital and processing and other amazing gadgetry.  I'm all digital these days, so I'm always interested in the latest announcements!!

I have a simple view on all of this - technology simply makes up the "tools" of our art, a person can be a real photographer with studios full of super-expensive gadgetry or something old-skool like a Box Brownie!!  I personally believe the key is in the "eye", a great photographer will produce something amazing with a home-made pin-hole, but a newbie with a Hasselblad H3D will probably still only manage a holiday snapshot (assuming they can drive the hardware!!).

Great technology does not make a great photographer, but a great photographer certainly knows how to use technology to its creative fullest (and often further!!).

And now that I've said all that, it can't hurt to have more gear, surely?  Here's some of the gear I would like to have in my collection!!  I have absolutely no need for any of these things, but I would like to play with all of them!!

New toys are always good! :boogie:

A photographer in Perth once told me this little anecdote... He was showing a friend some of his work over coffee and cake at his friends place. His friend said "Wow! Your work is amazing! You must have a really good camera?" He replied "You know, this cake is pretty amazing - You must have a really good oven!" ;)

I have a couple of Box Brownie's. One of them is sentimental to me but the other one I picked up a while back is unusable and beyond repair. I've been thinking of modifying it. I'll let you know how I go.... :)
